ADECOM College Hospitality students explore the enchanting IITA urban forest in Ibadan

In a bid to broaden their practical understanding of ecotourism and sustainable hospitality, students from the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management Technology. Adecom College of Business and Management students, embarked on a memorable field excursion to the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Ibadan.

Nestled within 1,000 hectares of pristine land, IITA stands as one of Africa’s finest urban forests an environment where nature, science, and serenity beautifully coexist. The center features an iconic 75-meter artificial lake, plunging an impressive 14 meters deep, and surrounded by over 140 species of trees that purify the air, cool the environment, and create a tranquil ecosystem ideal for tourism and environmental studies.

Guided by the knowledgeable tour guide, Mr. Oluwafemi, the students journeyed through the breathtaking secondary forest, using a mapped trail that revealed the forest’s ecological treasures. They encountered indigenous African tree species such as Mahogany, Arere, and Araba, all thriving within the carefully preserved artificial forest.

The tour lasted over an hour, but the students wished it had been longer. Each step offered new insights into forest conservation, biodiversity, and the role of natural landscapes in hospitality and tourism development.

The excursion was more than an academic outing it was an enriching experience that inspired curiosity, environmental awareness, and appreciation for Nigeria’s natural heritage. It also reaffirmed Adecom College’s commitment to experiential learning, ensuring that students gain both theoretical knowledge and real-world exposure necessary to excel in the global hospitality and tourism industry.
