The Rector of Adecom College of Business and Management,
Dr. Adewale Adesina, has reaffirmed that Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates are fully equipped to compete at the highest professional levels, insisting that the long-standing HND/BSc dichotomy must be laid to rest.

Furthermore, Dr. Adesina made this assertion today January 27, 2026, during a televised interview on a Yoruba programme “KUTUHAI”, aired on the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS). The discussion focused on “Ending the Dichotomy Between HND and BSc Certificates.”

In addition, as he speaks with clarity and conviction, the Rector stressed that HND graduates should not be treated as inferior, noting that both university and polytechnic systems were designed to complement and not compete with each other. According to him, universities are primarily structured to advance theoretical knowledge and research, while polytechnics are tailored towards practical application and skills development.

In the meantime, he laments that this original purpose has been largely misunderstood and neglected over time, thereby creating an unhealthy division between the two qualifications. When purpose is ignored, confusion takes the stage, he noted, adding that the resulting dichotomy has unfairly diminished the value of polytechnic education.

Moreover, Dr. Adesina further advised that polytechnics deserve greater recognition and support from the government, particularly for their role in entrepreneurship, technical innovation, and practical problem-solving, which directly contribute to economic growth. Drawing a global comparison, he revealed that China is actively transforming many of its universities into technical and vocational institutions, where hands-on skills and practical entrepreneurship take precedence.

In continuation, the Rector disclosed that concrete steps are already underway to end this inequality, citing a recent stakeholders’ meeting held in Abuja aimed at addressing the imbalance. He commended the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, for championing reforms targeted at bridging the gap, including proposals for polytechnics to award Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degrees.

Conclusively, Dr. Adesina specifically thanked President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the administration’s commitment to fairness and equity in the education sector. He concluded with a passionate appeal for swift action, urging that the HND/BSc dichotomy be consigned to history, as the future of national development lies in skills, innovation, and competence not in paper hierarchy.
